Profection Year Meaning in Astrology
A profection year is the year of life assigned to a house by annual profections, the Hellenistic technique of timing in which the Ascendant advances one sign a year. The first year of life, from birth to the first birthday, belongs to the first house; the second year to the second house; the twelfth year to the twelfth; the thirteenth year, beginning at age twelve, returns to the first, and the cycle repeats every twelve years. The house profected to is the house whose topics the year turns on, and the planet ruling its sign is the lord of the year, the time lord whose natal condition and transits govern the year.
The count
The profected house for any age is found by dividing the age by twelve and taking the remainder: a remainder of 0 gives the first house, 1 the second, and so on, so the profected house is the remainder plus one. The year runs from birthday to birthday, and the profection changes on the birthday, not with the calendar.

The count is by whole signs. The sign rising, whatever the degree of the Ascendant, is the first house; the sign that many places on from it is the profected sign; and the traditional ruler of that sign, Mars for Scorpio, Saturn for Aquarius, Jupiter for Pisces, is the lord of the year. Profections are a whole sign technique and are not done with Placidus or any other quadrant cusps.
What the year is read from
Three things are read. First, the profected house: its topics are the year's field. A sixth-house year turns on illness, work, and service; a seventh-house year on marriage and partnership; a tenth on career and standing; an eighth on death, loss, and others' money; a twelfth on confinement, seclusion, and enemies. Planets natally in that sign are activated for the year; an empty sign leaves the year to its lord.
Second, the lord of the year. Its natal sign, house, dignity, and aspects describe how the year goes. A lord that is a benefic in dignity in a good house gives a good year of the profected house's kind. A lord that is a malefic in fall, or placed in the sixth, eighth, or twelfth, gives a hard one, and the year takes its character from the lord's natal house as much as from the profected house: Saturn as lord of the year sitting natally in the twelfth is a year of Saturn's business in the twelfth's place, illness, isolation, and hidden loss.
Third, the transits of and to the lord. The tradition holds that transits during the year matter most when they involve the lord of the year, whether transits made by the lord to natal planets or transits of other planets to the natal lord. The solar return is read together with the profection: the lord of the year's position in the solar return chart, and the solar return's Ascendant relative to the profected sign, are the annual chart's most telling features.
The texts
Annual profections are set out in Vettius Valens's Anthologies, where they are used from the Ascendant and from other points, the Sun, the Moon, and the Lot of Fortune, and combined with other time lords. Dorotheus and Firmicus Maternus use them. The Arabic astrologers, Abu Ma'shar in his work on the revolutions of the years of nativities and Masha'allah before him, made the profection and the solar return one method, and Bonatti carried it into the Latin West. The technique fell out of general use with the rise of modern astrology and was restored by the Hellenistic revival; Chris Brennan's Hellenistic Astrology is the standard modern account.
An example
A person with Sagittarius rising is, at twenty-nine, in a sixth-house year: Taurus is the sixth sign from Sagittarius, and Venus is lord of the year. If natal Venus is in Capricorn in the second house, square Saturn, the year's illness or trouble at work is tied to money and to Saturn, and the Saturn return that begins at that age transits the very planet in charge of the year. The tradition reads such a year as hard, names its topics, and dates it from the birthday.
Jyotisha has an analogous method in the varshaphala of Tajika astrology, the annual chart cast for the solar return, whose muntha advances one sign a year from the lagna exactly as the profection does.
