When Is My Saturn Return?

A Saturn return begins when transiting Saturn comes within a few degrees of the degree Saturn held at birth and ends when it leaves that degree behind for good. Dating it needs two things: the natal position of Saturn to the degree, and the ephemeris for the years around ages twenty-nine, fifty-eight, and eighty-seven. Age alone gives a range of about three years; the chart gives the dates.

Why age is not enough

Saturn's motion, seen from Earth, is not uniform. Its period averages about twenty-nine and a half years, but it runs fast and slow across the zodiac and stops entirely at its stations. A person whose natal Saturn sits where Saturn now moves quickly may have a return that passes in a single contact over a few months; a person whose natal Saturn sits where Saturn stations may have three exact contacts stretched over more than a year. Two people born a month apart can have returns that differ by most of a year. Hence the tradition's rule: the return is dated from the degree, never from the birthday.

The calculation

1. Natal Saturn's sign and degree, from a chart calculated for the date, time, and place of birth. Saturn moves about a tenth of a degree a day, so the date alone fixes it within a degree; the birth time matters far less here than for the Moon or the Ascendant.
2. The dates, from the ephemeris, on which transiting Saturn reaches that degree. There will be one contact or three: a direct pass, a retrograde pass, and a direct pass again. If natal Saturn lies close to a degree at which the transit stations, there may be a long stay rather than three clean crossings.
3. The orb. The whole applying and separating passage, commonly taken as three degrees either side of the natal degree, is the return; within one degree of exact it is at its height.

Because Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross a sign, everyone born with Saturn in a given tropical sign has a return while Saturn transits that sign. Saturn is in tropical Aries through 2026 and 2027, so those born with Saturn in Aries, roughly from the spring of 1996 to the early months of 1999, are having their first return in these years, and those born with Saturn in Aries between 1967 and 1969 their second. Those born with Saturn in Taurus follow from 2028.

What is read once the dates are known

With the dates fixed, the reading follows Saturn's natal condition: the house it occupies, the houses it rules, its sign and dignity, its sect, and its aspects. The return's events fall in the natal house, and the tradition reads them there with its usual plainness: Saturn in the seventh at the return is a marriage made, tested, or ended; Saturn in the sixth is work and health; Saturn in the twelfth is a season of withdrawal or confinement.

Saturn's transits to other natal planets during the same months, and the annual profection in force, complete the picture. Age twenty-nine is a sixth-house profection year and thirty a seventh-house year, so the first return commonly straddles a year of work and illness and a year of partnership; age fifty-eight is an eleventh-house year, fifty-nine a twelfth-house year, and sixty a return to the first house. The return is one transit among several, and the profection says which of its meanings is in force.

The Vedic count

In Jyotisha, Saturn's return to its natal sidereal degree keeps the same schedule, but the tradition dates Saturn's hard years from the Moon rather than from Saturn: Sade Sati, the seven and a half years while Saturn transits the twelfth, first, and second signs from the natal Moon. Since the sidereal zodiac lies about twenty-four degrees behind the tropical, Saturn is presently in sidereal Pisces though tropically in Aries; the ayanamsa, the offset between the two zodiacs, is what a calculated chart applies. A person asking when their Saturn return falls is, in the Vedic frame, better answered with the dates of their Sade Sati and the dasha running through it.

Without a birth time

Saturn's position hardly changes across a day, so the return can be dated without a birth time. What cannot be known without the time is the house the return falls in, since the houses depend on the Ascendant, which changes sign about every two hours. In that case the tradition reads the return by sign and by aspect alone and says that it has done so.
