Ama: Undigested Toxin in Ayurveda
Ama is what remains when agni, the digestive fire, fails to finish its work: a heavy, sticky, foul, half-cooked residue that stays in the gut, seeps into the channels, and lodges in the tissues. The word means unripe or uncooked. Ama is not a toxin in the sense of a poison taken in from outside; it is the body's own food, incompletely transformed, and it is the tradition's single most common cause of disease. The Ashtanga Hridaya devotes a passage to it, and the Madhava Nidana names amavata, ama in the joints, as a disease in its own right.
How ama forms
Ama is born of mandagni, dull fire, and of anything that dulls it. The causes the texts list are plain: eating before the previous meal is digested; eating too much; cold, heavy, oily, or stale food; incompatible combinations, such as milk with sour fruit or fish; eating in grief, anger, or hurry; sleeping by day; and suppressing the natural urges. Each dosha produces ama in its own way. Vata does it through irregular eating and worry, Pitta through excess of sour and hot food that overheats the fire, and Kapha, most of all, through heaviness, sweetness, and inactivity. The residue first collects in the stomach and upper gut, the seat of Kapha, and only later travels.
The signs
The signs of ama are read on the tongue first. A thick coating, white in Kapha, yellow in Pitta, brownish-grey in Vata, is the surest mark, and a clean tongue on rising is the surest mark of its absence. The body's signs follow: heaviness of the limbs and of the head, lassitude without cause, a dull ache in the joints, indigestion with belching and a bad taste, loss of appetite that is not true hunger, foul breath, stool that is sticky, heavy, and sinks in water, cloudy urine, mental fog, and a general sense of being blocked. A dosha carrying ama is called sama; one free of it is nirama. The distinction decides treatment, because a sama dosha is never pacified with unctuous, sweet, or building substances until the ama has been cleared.
From residue to disease
Ama begins in the gut and does not stay there. Once it enters rasa, the nutrient fluid, it circulates, and being sticky it obstructs whatever channel it reaches. This is srotorodha, the blocking of the channels, and it is how a digestive residue becomes a disease of the joints, the skin, the chest, or the mind. When ama joins with Vata in the joints the result is amavata, with pain that moves, swelling, stiffness in the morning, and a heaviness that worsens in damp weather. When it joins Kapha in the chest it thickens phlegm; when it joins Pitta it produces fevers that are heavy and dull rather than sharp; when it clogs the fat tissue it produces the sluggish weight that no diet shifts. The Sushruta Samhita's six stages of disease, the kriyakala, accumulation, aggravation, spread, localisation, manifestation, and complication, are in large part an account of how ama travels.
What ama is not
Ama is distinguished from the three malas, the normal wastes, stool, urine, and sweat, which the body must produce and which cause disease only when suppressed or excessive. It is distinguished from the doshas themselves, which are the body's functional principles and are never removed, only balanced. And it is distinguished from kleda, the moisture that Kapha and Pitta contribute to the tissues, which is healthy until ama makes it stagnant. A person can be thin and full of ama, or heavy and free of it; weight is not the measure.
The place of ama in treatment
Because ama obstructs and weighs, its treatment is the opposite: langhana, lightening, through fasting or a very light diet; pachana, digestion of what is stuck, with pungent and bitter plants and hot water; and only then deepana, rekindling the fire. Panchakarma is never begun on a body full of ama, because a sticky dosha cannot be moved to the gut for expulsion; the preparatory weeks exist to ripen the ama and make the doshas nirama first. The same logic governs a rasayana: given over ama, a nourishing preparation feeds the residue and not the person. Chinese medicine's dampness and phlegm are the nearest parallel, and it reads them with much the same tongue.
